Young widows re-discover hope at Adani Skill Development Center

For 22-year-old Lilbai Koli from Mirjapur village of Kutch in Gujarat, life came to a standstill when her husband passed away last year. Being a widow at such a young age and losing the sole breadwinner left her with few options to provide for a good life to her child. She was haplessly looking into an uncertain future ahead.

Today, Lilbai is earning her living as a Patient Care Assistant in the emergency ward of GK General Hospital in Bhuj.

Lilbai is part of the group of women who took training in General Duty Assistant (GDA) Course at the Adani Skill Development Centre in the neighbourhood Bhuj.

The facility that believes in infusing confidence in its beneficiaries helped implement the vision of the District Rural Development Authority to empower many widowed women such as Lilbai.

“When we enable women, they bring transformation at homes and the society at large. It’s our way of contributing towards nation building. ,” said Dr. Priti G. Adani, Chairperson, Adani Foundation

It all began with a visit to villages and identifying women who needed help and had the resilience to move up in life. The purpose for the month-long activity was clear. We wanted to get make them employable through proper training and assist in getting them placements. Regular classroom training, practical training in GDA and complete handholding during their on the-job training at G.K General Hospital, the induction process was designed in a manner to make the shortlisted candidates independent

Fifteen young women from the batch have successfully been placed in various reputed hospitals that include Lions Hospital, Leva Patel Hospital and Hirani Hospital in Bhuj.

That’s not all.

The Adani Skill Development Centres have been enabling the youth in different trades and skills tailor-made for the job market. Many interested candidates are also enabled in becoming entrepreneurs. 

Over the past two years, the Adani Skill Development Centres, working in sync with the National Skill Development Centre guidelines, have trained more than 25,000 youth. Through ASDC, Adani Foundation envisions to provide skill training and create job opportunities for 300,000 people by 2022.

Currently there are more than training 60 centers functioning across India offering skill training in 40 trades.
