A joyful learning environment is also provided in the form of “Building as Learning Aid” (BaLA), developing appropriate sanitation and hygiene through safe drinking water and providing supplementary nutrition to Aanganwadis, Kishori/adolescent girls and women in Anganwadis across all the sites.
A Balwadi for the kids of age 2.5 to 5 years has been constructed at Zarpara and several others have been upgraded in Juna Bandar, Luni Bandar and Bavadi Bandar in Mundra, Gujarat. Balwadis for the kids of fisher-folk community have been built to inculcate a sense of awareness about health, hygiene, cleanliness, discipline, regularity and importance of education at an early age for the children and especially among their parents. More than 140 children avail benefits from Balwadis every year.
Various activities have been initiated in Kawai, Rajasthan for the development of laborers’ children of the region & providing them better future prospects. Various activities such as health checkups, uniform and sweater distribution are carried out regularly. Important events like children’s day and republic day are also celebrated along with the children. Learning has been made fun with drawing, poem recitation, and storytelling & plays, for the holistic development of Balwadi children.
Learning is always a fun and to develop this attitude especially in the govt. school students, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has come up with BaLA i.e. Building as Learning Aid. The activities in Hazira, Gujarat, are planned in such a way that each student as well as teachers is involved in the activity. The first phase is all about coloring their schools and walls with the pictures of Computer, Solar-System etc. and the next phase is about how we can make those pictures alive which would help students in enhancing their capabilities of exploring things which are present around them not only on the walls but also outside their classrooms.
In order to engage children of Dahej, Gujarat, in the learning process, the activities are planned in such a way that each student and school teachers get involved in the entire activity. The idea is first to make the school building as the learning aid for the child. The buildings are painted with colorful pictures which focus on improving the child’s learning through attracting them towards different forms of designs, pictures and colors used. The paintings themselves give a holistic view of the learning to the children in their class. Further, an amount of Rs. 9000 per annum is also provided for each child, from Standard I to XII for upto 2 children per family.
