Lighting up Remote Rural Areas
Dhanendra Bhaskar Pardhi, Vice Sarpanch of Chirekhani Gram Panchayat of Gondia District, Maharashtra, has vivid memories of the time when his village had to struggle for one of the most basic necessities of life – light.
Adani Foundation while working in the villages of Gondia District in its core areas of Education, Community Health, Sustainable Livelihood, Environment and Rural Infrastructure, discovered that street lights was one of the main requirements in the area.
In December 2011, Adani Foundation decided to address this issue installing 101 street lights over a span of a year. It was further decided that these would be solar lights as apart from being environmental friendly, they also offer substantial saving in cost up to Rs. 1 lac per annum. Keeping in mind Adani Foundation’s policy of collaborative partnership for all developmental activities, the ownership of the solar lights was handed over to the villagers after installation. But, it didn’t stop there. Technical knowledge and training was also provided for proper & regular maintenance of the lights by the Gram Panchayats itself.
Dhanendra Pardhi strongly feels that a social revolution has happened after the installation of these lights.
“The crime rate has gone down; young men have stopped gambling by the roadside; safety of women has gone up; children are able to play after sunset; and night-time accidents have reduced substantially.”, says, Dhanendra Pardhi.
Adani Foundation shall continue to harness the power of the sun to transform many more lives.
